Being Emily

Europe: 2005 ~ 2018 :: Spain&United Kingdom

On the 22nd of January 2005 the non-identical twins Lorca Sebastian and Emily Carmen were born. Emily was diagnosed with Down's Syndrome the following day. As a photographer and father I started documenting Emily's life form the early times full of uncertainties to the spell-bounding progress she has made and the raw charm Emily selflessly gives any one she encounters. The images in this collection show many different aspects of living with Emily and were taken in the UK and Spain form 2005 to 2015.

Most of the images were captured with compact digital cameras, iPhones and only a handful of them with professional dslr's.

People with Down’s Syndrome are now much more part of society but there is a long way to go. I the viewer can see these images where Emily is portrayed candidly as a young girl full of dreams, aspirations, wants, needs, likes and dislike...just  like anyone else. I hope through these images we can see Emily an individual, rather than just a girl with Down’s syndrome.

Down's syndrome or Trisomy 21, is a genetic disorder caused by the presence of all or part of a third copy of chromosome 21.
